March 2019 Council News

Developmental Disabilities Month

Each year, the National Association of Councils on Developmental Disabilities (NACDD) recognizes Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month! Councils work to create awareness about developmental disabilities, teach the importance of inclusion within every aspect of life, and to share the stories of individuals with a disability to show that a successful life is possible.

In 1987, President Ronald Reagan made a public proclamation that the month of March should be recognized as Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month to “increase public awareness of the needs and potential of Americans with developmental disabilities.” Though the mission remains largely the same, so much has changed since 1987. While we still aim to increase public awareness, we also highlight the importance of inclusion and living life side by side.

If you have a story to share and want to participate, use the social media hashtag #ddawareness19 to join the campain.

Our spring session of Take Your Legislator to Work is coming up!

Through this advocacy program, participants who have community-based employment or volunteer work invite their legislators to highlight their jobs and the work they do in their communities. This program offers a chance to showcase how the skills and talents of people with disabilities contribute to Utah’s economic success. We want everyone to see the valuable contributions of individuals with disabilities to Utah’s workforce. If you are interested in participating, please email uddc@utah.gov. Enrollment is open now, and visits will start in a few weeks.
